Simonsig Chenin Blanc 2016
Ever the pioneers and innovators, Simonsig Wine Estate in Stellenbosch are not packing their Chenin Blanc and Pinotage in a new made for purpose bottle. It’s essentially the classic Burgundy shape, perhaps leaning gently to the Alsatian.
The Estate’s first ever bottled wine was a Chenin Blanc which owner Frans Malan released in 1968, long before he, Neil Joubert and Spatz Sperling founded the Stellenbosch Wine Route.
Chenin Blanc ripening on the vine
Hot weather preceding the 2015 harvest allowed Francois Malan Owner and Viticulturist to bring in grapes of fine quality, just slightly larger than the previous year. The grapes for the Simonsig Chenin Blanc 2016 are hand harvested, then brought into the cellar. Johan Malan, owner and Cellarmaster and his team destemmed and crushed, and then allowed overnight skin contact. The juice was then run off and cold settled to gem bright clarity. Slow fermentation took place under cold conditions using inoculated yeasts which produce wines with great fruit expression. The wine was then prepared for bottling
It looks like
Burgundy shaped bottle with new glass embossing on the front and back. Under screw cap closure. Very elegant new look label. In the glass crystal clear pale straw with lime green flashes.
Piel de Sapo Melon
It smells like
A mélange of tropical fruits, fynbos homey and white flowers – very beguiling.
It tastes like
Full flavours of guava and piel de sapo melon. Lovely citrus thread running through it from entry to aftertaste. Guava and desiccated mango undertow. Crisp and refreshing, a wine that over delivers in every respect – great bang for your buck.
Hein van Tonder’s Flatbreads with Grilled Zucchini
dressed in Lemon & Hemp Seed Oil
It’s good with
Superb as a glass on its own as a mid-morning refresher, aperitif or watching the sun go down. I always associate Chenin Blanc with chicken, though it works as well with cold fish dishes, smoked fish and soft goat cheese. Hein van Tonder’s Flatbreads with Grilled Zucchini dressed in Lemon and Hemp Seed Oil is a great summery meal with which to enjoy this sublime wine. Click here for his recipe.
