Oldenburg’s Rondekop, radiant in Autumn
Oldenburg is a wine Estate set in the sheer beauty of the southern end of the Banghoek Valley.
Surrounded by mountains of Alpine magnificence, it has an enchanting little hill in the middle called Rondekop. Made up of ferrocrete soils which give the most fabulous mineral flavours to the wines.

I was asked recently to taste their new release – a first – of the Oldenburg Viognier 2015. The grapes were of such great quality in 2015, that Philip Costandius, the Estate’s GM and Winemaker decided to bottle a single variety wine.
I think this is a truly fine wine.

It looks like
Bottled in a Burgundy shaped bottle with the elegant grey label used by the Estate for its white wines. In the glass a rich straw with green amber flashes.
It smells like
Viognier is an aromatic wine, it has strong floral nose and just wonderful fruit, apricots, soft dried peaches.

It tastes like
The aromas are repeated on the palate. Full rich fruit at entry filling the mid palate and tailing off into satisfying, crisp aftertaste. Often blended with Shiraz and frequently co-fermented with it, it works well as a single variety wine. The oaking is so well applied as a support base for the wonderful aromatic fruit with its full soft acidity.
Alida Ryder’s Cranberry Brie Puff Pastry Wreath
It’s good with
This is a superb food wine. It is a great partner for anything from a grilled cheese dish through chicken, duck, turkey, pork and veal. And of course, perfect with a lusty vegetarian main course. It will enjoy the delicacy of a light summer salad, say with lettuce and prawns, smoked chicken. Alida Ryder’s Cranberry Brie Puff Pastry Wreath is just perfect for this wine. Oozy cheese, touch of sweet sour from the cranberry and crunch from the pistachios, perfect to serve as a dessert at the end of a meal, and white wine and cheese are such a good match.
