Having known Peter Allan Finlayson since he was born, it is soul filling to watch his success as a winemaker, on his own account and as winemaker on his parents-in-law’s wine far.  His Gabriëlskloof The Blend 2015 is made from estate-grown Bordeaux grape varieties led by Cabernet Sauvignon. 2015 is regarded as one of the Cape’s classic vintages.

“The grapes are handpicked into small crates, ensuring that only the best, optimally ripe fruit is vinified,” says Peter-Allan. “By combining excellent fruit with carefully selected barrels, we have created a wine showing delicate violets and dark fruit on both nose and palate, with just a hint of vanilla and tobacco leaf. The mouthfeel is refined with a restrained, fynbos finish.”

Most recently, the 2013 vintage won Double Gold at the Six Nations Wine Challenge, judged by an international panel to compare the very best wines from Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Chile, Canada and the US; and, the trophy for best in class at the Old Mutual Trophy Wine Show.

Highlighting Gabriëlskloof’s approach of working with nature to craft wines expressive of their birthplace, the 2014 vintage was singled out for four stars at the 2016 Nedbank Green Wine Awards and named Best Red in the IPW (Integrated Production of Wine) category of this competition for sustainably grown wines.

In addition to environmentally-friendly practices on the farmland that produces Gabriëlskloof’s product, specialised cameras have been set up for the conservation and monitoring of natural wildlife, such as leopard and other wild game. The cameras are part of its comprehensive environmental management plan to encourage biodiversity.
