Landskroon Blanc de Noir Pinotage Off-Dry 2016

6 generations of the de Villiers family have worked the soil of their Landskroon Estate since they took ownership in the late 1800s. Three de Villiers brothers arrived in Cape Town as French Huguenots from La Rochelle in early May 1685. They were fleeing France as Protestants after the repeal of the Edict of Nantes in 1685 which allowed freedom of religion.

Paul & Nelie de Villiers

In recent times, the family have made great red wines and current Cellarmaster Paul’s grandfather was known for his Port style wines.  In the early 90s, current Cellarmaster Paul took the Diners Club Winemaker of the Year for his Ports.

Not that they are slouches when it comes to making white wines.  Michiel du Toit, the winemaker and Paul are producing some very exciting whites and also todays wine of choice, Landskroon Blanc de Noir Pinotage Off-Dry 2016.

Pinotage Grapes ripening on the vine

Made solely from Pinotage grapes, in the style of a white wine, only free run juice is used and then cool settles for 48 hours, taking clear juice into stainless steel tank fermentation, from which time it is made like a white wine.

Colour is important in Blanc de Noir as if the wine is too pink, it is then classified as a Rosé. The wine can only be made with black grapes as the name infers –white of black.

It looks like
Bottled under screwcap in a Bordeaux shaped bottle with elegant Anthony Lane designed label. In the glass it is gem bright, like a pink diamond.

It smells like
Berry fruits, rose petals.

It tastes like
Delicious sappy fruit entry. Very easy to drink, filling mid palate and an aftertaste which lingers. Refresher.
