Talent & Terroir Shiraz, Cinsaut Rosé & Chenin Blanc

Vibrant Talent in the vineyards and the winery and a variety of Terroir has led to the launch of a range of three wines from Boland Cellar named Talent & Terroir, a Chenin Blanc, a Cinsaut Rosé and a Shiraz. Boland Cellar has for some time been creating premium niche ranges such as its One Formation and this one, Talent & Terroir.

Talent & Terroir Chenin Blanc 2016

The grapes for the Talent & Terroir Chenin Blanc 2016 come from the slopes of both the Paardeberg and the Drakenstein Mountains. The wine was made in a lack of oxygen atmosphere and an extended period of three hours skin contact was allowed before pressing. Once pressed, the wine was left on the lees for three months to add to the character.

It looks like
Bottled under cork screw with an elegant label.  Delicate pale straw in the glass.

It smells like
Tropical fruits like desiccated pineapple, guava.

It tastes like
A generosity of fruit, preponderance of guava and windfall citrus.  Creamy mouthfeel and a long gently waning aftertaste.

It’s good with
Delicious as a glass on its own, the perfect refresher. Excellent with a good butter roasted organic chicken.

Talent & Terroir Cinsaut Rosé 2016

The grapes for the Talent & Terroir Cinsaut Rosé 2016 are specially grown for the production of this wine on dry land bush vines in the combined granite and shale soils on the Paardeberg. Once in the cellar after destalking, the grapes are allowed four hours of skin contact to extract just sufficient colour from the skins to colour the final wine a delicate cherry blossom blush.  Cool fermentation maintained the crisp freshness of the wine.

It looks like
All three wines of this range are packed in Burgundy shaped bottles under screw cap.  In the glass, cherry blossom in colour and gem bright.

It smells like
Cherries and rose petals.

It tastes like
The fruit is ever present with gentle grinds of white pepper.  Full and crisp, and creamy long aftertaste, perfect in harmony.

It’s good with
Excellent as a refreshing glass mid-morning.  Excellent with delicate summery foods, crisp lettuce and fennel salads with white anchovies.  Smoked salmon or trout with lemon on crisp bruschetta. Salmon mousse, mussels.

Talent & Terroir Shiraz 2015

Grapes for the Talent & Terroir Shiraz 2015 come from 8 hectares of vineyard planted in the granite and shale soils of Voor Paardeberg. Once in the cellar, the grapes were destalked and then allowed 48 hours of on skin maceration before the fermentation started naturally. The was later fortified by inoculation of a commercial yeast.  Once fermentation was complete, two weeks skin contact took place.  The wine was matured in second and third fill small French oak barrels for a year.  Blending of the best barrels took place before the wine was prepared for bottling.

It looks like
Packed like the others in the range, it is a deep dark ruby at the core which pales out to garnet at the rim.

It smells like
Plums, mulberries, split vanilla beans and smoke.

It tastes like
You notice the perfect balance the moment of entry. Rich almost fruit cake flavours, white pepper and some sweet brown Christmas cake spices. Silken ending and a long aftertaste.

Excellent Boerewors from Woolworths

It’s good with
Good as the pre-braai glass while waiting for the flames to die down. Excellent with any meat on the braai, particularly a juicy, spicy boerewors. Does well with lamb and apricot kebabs too.
