Klein Constantia Riesling 2015
Jancis Robinson, well known British Wine Writer says that Riesling make some of the Finest white wines in the world. There are many who agree.
Klein Constantia makes one of the finest examples of a Riesling. The grape is very dependent on the climate during the harvest period so each year the wine from the vintage differs. The 2015 vintage has one of the earliest starts to the harvest in a long time.
The grapes had very ripe flavours with their usual fabulous acidity and Matt Day, Klein Constantia’s Winemaker decided to make a dry Riesling rather than the Estate’s usual off dry expression.
Like most excellent Rieslings, the Klein Constantia Riesling 2015 will last well and the flavours and aromas will become more complex and the classical turpene flavours will develop.
Riesling, noble wine grape of German origin
In the winemaking processes, the grapes are taken to the cellar where they are destemmed. The grapes and juice had a long pre-fermentation cold soak. The juice was pressed and the wine underwent natural fermentation using yeasts indigenous to the vineyards, which live on the skins of the grapes. After fermentation, the wine was left on the lees for 6-month maturation period before being prepared for bottling.
It looks like
Packed in the classic Alsatian Flute under screwcap. In the glass it is a pale golden straw colour with a green tinge.
It smells like
Classical Riesling whiffs, aromatic and much layered wine. Lovely fruit.
It tastes like
Brilliant white flowers and fruit on entry. Full mouthful of creamy deliciousness. A long aftertaste with a zippy acidity.

It’s good with
This is the ideal food wine. There are a number of possibilities and I found that Nina Timm’s Smoked Snoek & Mussel Parcels worked really well with this wine. I am moderately berserk about mussels. Click here for her recipe.
