Groot Constantia Shiraz 2014
Groot Constantia is in the heartland of the Cape Wine Industry and sits amongst some of the oldest granted estate’s in the industry. One of the Big 7 of the most visited Cape attractions, not only for its wines, but also the amazing historical architecture.
My wine of the day is Groot Constantia Shiraz 2014.
Boela Gerber in the Groot Constantia Vineyards
Boela Gerber, Groot Constantia winemaker, has a soft spot for Shiraz [he told me!]. The vineyards are planted on Clovelly Glenrosa soils and are much affected by the cooling Benguela Current breezes from over the mountain and off False Bay. This results in a longer hang time to ripening and thus fuller flavour in the grapes at harvesting time.
Shiraz ripening on the vine
Once in the cellar the grapes are destemmed and crushed and then fermented in open tanks with regular pump overs every 4 hours during the first half of the fermentation. After fermentation, some of the blocks were allowed a period of maceration on the skins. This is followed by 14 months in French oak barrels, 34% of them new barrels, 42% second fill, 19% 3rd fill and 5% 4th fill. The wine is then prepared for bottling.
Groot Constantia Barrel Cellar
It looks like
Elegantly packed in the Constantia bottle with glass embossing, under cork with the Groot Constantia ‘etching’ in the label. In the glass a deep Satsuma plum at the core which pales out to ruby garnet at the edges.
It smells like
The softer side of Shiraz. Floral violets. Bright red and black fruit.
It tastes like
Brilliantly and generously fruited. Grind of white pepper and an undertow of Italian Spek. The tannins are soft and well integrated with the fruit, the oak and the refreshing acidity.
Lizet Hartley’s Rosemary Lamb Chops & Green Olive Salsa Verde
It’s good with
Perfect for the time you really want a good red wine in your glass. The spiceyness of the wine matches well with spicy foods, boerewors from the braai or a well marinated piece of steak.
