The Landskroon Wine Estate has been in the De Villiers Family for 5 generations. Descended from the first three de Villiers brothers who arrived in Cape Town in 1689 as French Huguenots from La Rochelle in France, the family owns and manages the farm. The cousins are 5th generation, with Hugo de Villiers, the first of the 6th generation now working on the Estate in charge of Labour and the Vineyards.
Situated on the south west facing slopes of the iconic Paarl Mountain, Table Mountain is in the western distance and the Simonsberg to the west at the entry to the Franschhoek Valley.
The seniors of the previous generations were also called Paul, like the current Cellarmaster, and the Estate has a range of premium wines called Paul de Villiers.
The grapes for the Landskroon Paul de Villiers Shiraz 2013 are taken to the cellar and both the old fashioned techniques of open tank fermenters after destalking and modern controlled fermentation using selected yeasts are used. Maturation take place in a mix of 95% new American oak barrels and 5% second fill French and American oak barrels for 17 months. The wine was then prepared for bottling.
It looks like
Bottled under cork in a Bordeaux shaped bottle. The labelling is classical black with red and gold printing. It the glass it is a rich opaque bloodplum in colour which pales to garnet at the rim.
It smells like
The expected Shiraz whiffs, plums, violets, spice and the oak.
It tastes like
Full bodied from entry. Generous red and black berries. A grind of white pepper and the spice and ‘smoke’ of the oak. Broad mid palate, oak and tannins well interwoven into the long aftertaste.
It’s good with
This is a wine for hearty dishes, from a lusty vegetarian aubergine, tomato, mushroom and cheese to a fine tranche of roast beef. Sometimes in the middle of the week a little reward of a fine wine like this goes as well with a supper dish.
