Dornier Wines

Christoph Dornier, born into a family of engineers, knew from an early age that art would be his life. And he became an artist of international repute.
He was attracted to Stellenbosch and in the early 1990's he became one of the first foreign investors in post apartheid South Africa. The mystical aspects of wine, its symbolism and beauty enchanted Dornier. Assisted by his youngest son Dr Raphael Dornier, his dream became a reality before his death in August 2008.

Jeremy and Mandy Walker's home and winery, Grangehurst, is on the slopes of the Helderberg Mountain midway between Stellenbosch and the False Bay coastline with a spectacular view to the west of the Table Mountain Reserve all the way from Cape Point to Signal Hill. To sit there, as I have, on their balcony in the early morning is a unique Cape treat. With a glass of Grangehurst wine in your hand a little later in the day, it is even more so.

The 200 year old advice of "cobbler stick to thy last" was not taken by the Jordan family, makers of the eponymous shoes, when Gary and Kathy Jordan returned to South Africa in 1992 to build a cellar in which to make wine from the classic varieties of grapes Gary's parents, Ted and Sheelagh had begun planting shortly after they purchased the property on the hills of Stellenbosch with its panoramic views of Table Mountain, False Bay and Stellenbosch.
In 1993, the year of the first vintage on Jordan, it was evident that this was a grande marque de vin in the making.
