Accolade for Wellington Distillery

The James Sedgwick Distillery, situated at the foothills of the Bain’s Kloof Pass in the Boland town of Wellington, has been named Best Brand Innovator in Whisky Magazine’s Icons of Whisky competition. The award is in recognition of the state-of-the-art facilities at the distillery as well as the innovative whiskies produced there.
The Icons was established to acknowledge the people and the places behind the world’s best whiskies and an independent panel compiles a shortlist from the entries received for the various categories. The winners are chosen by vote and this year, only a few votes separated the

Austerity Fishcakes
Made on 2nd January with a 425g tin of Lucky Star Middlecut I was given at the launch of Lannice Snymans book Out of the Can and inspired by her Pilchard Fishcakes Recipe.
1 x 425g tin of Lucky Star Middlecut
2 medium potatoes, peeled, cut into cubes and boiled
1 medium onion, finely chopped
1 Tbs sunflower oil
2 Tbs finely chopped parsley
grated rind of 1 lemon
2 eggs, whisked
sea salt and freshly milled black pepper

Avontuur announces new Winemaker

Jan van Rooyen with nearly two decades’ worth of winemaking experience, was recently appointed at Avontuur Estate as winemaker. When asked about his objectives for the wines, he said that he has a 10 year plan, but would love to build on the foundation laid by his predecessors and improve on the quality of the premier range wines, especially the Chardonnay. He plans to concentrate on producing great Reds from this farm’s classic Helderberg terroir and have fun with the bubbly, the brandies and the noble late harvest.
