Wild Woods in Hout Bay

Simple food as Peter Goffe Wood will tell you, is the hardest to get right – there needs to be such attention to detail because with simple food there is nowhere to hide. There are no elaborate garnishes, no flourishes with sauce, no molecular hanky panky – just well sourced fresh ingredients that have been treated with respect.

But then you need the training, the experience, the feel to get it right.  And Pete has all these and more.

This restaurant does not only have great food, a good bar and an excellent short wine list – it has umami.  It feels so good.

Totally unpretentious, what you see is what you get, Pete’s food never fails to  deliver and delight.

It’s comfort food, it’s  so simple and just bursting with flavour.

We had a couple of fabulous dishes – Saldhana Bay mussels, white wine, garlic, tomato & chorizo, a flavoursome new take with the chorizo addition.  I revelled in the Jamon Lucas – a Spanish style cured ham from Oak Valley Estates in Elgin which was served with, rocket, peaches & shaved Parmesan.

Crisp belly of pork, spinach & celeriac puree was my main course which I just loved while Maddie had the never fail to delight Grilled aged sirloin steak, chips & café de Paris butter.

Slow Food Sundays at Wild Woods are for gathering around the family table and taking the time to reconnect with each other, without the urgency and frenetic pace of everyday life. At Wild Woods Bistro, Pete puts together a Sunday meal, served in bowls and shared around the table, just like you would in your own home. A different meal will be served each Sunday evening and has already become an institution in Hout Bay.

For us definitely a destination restaurant and as they say on the Guide Michelin, well worth the detour.  Here is the information.
