De Krans makes a Pink Port

De Krans Pink Port

De Krans Pink Port

When I visited the Taylors Port Lodge in Oporto in Northern Portugal a year or so ago, I asked to taste their new Crofts Pink Port which has been such a huge success in the UK, particularly at Marks and Spencer for who they did a special bottling

I wondered why in our hot summer climate, no Port producer here had not thought of it.

I was wrong – Boets and Stroebel Nel of De Krans in Calitzdorp were well on their way.

Made from traditional port varieties Touriga Nacional, Tinta Barocca and Souzão, the grapes were allowed only a few hours skin contact just to colour it a pretty pink.  It’s fortified with brandy resulting in a Port with a lovely vibrant pink blush colour and yummy ripe red berries and a long, lingering aftertaste.

Suggest you serve it chilled with nuts and olives and slices of chorizo sausage or biltong.  Ice will dilute it, so add a big block if you need to!
