People are always asking me whether it is the same wine in a box as it is in a bottle?
The answer is – Absolutely!
A case in point is the 3 litre Du Toitskloof Sauvignon Blanc, nearly always one of the first on the shelves, almost before the presses have been washed out. Du Toitskloof Sauvignon Blanc is a quintessential Sauvignon, offering delicious tropical fruits with a twist of lime.
Du Toitskloof won the Best Value Winery Award last year.
David Biggs, the well known wine writer, travels up to the family farm in the Karoo on a Vespa Scooter sometimes and always stops at the winery to put a couple of bottles of their delicious Muscadel in his pannier bags. How many are still there when he reaches Colesberg is a matter of conjecture, particularly in winter I would imagine.
Du Toitskloof packs two white varietal wines, a Sauvignon Blanc and a Chenin Blanc and then a red blend of Pinotage, Merlot and Ruby Cabernet – one of the yummiest red quaffers around.
The Chenin is benchmark guava, honey and flowers stuff and the Pinotage led blend shows all the red fruit characteristics of the Pinotage grape, strawberry, mulberry and red berries, the plums of the Merlot and the elegance of the Cabernet parent of the Ruby Cab.
Jacques Jordaan who is responsible for marketing at Du Toitskloof told me that two of the three wines were gold-medal winners in 2009 – the Sauvignon Blanc won gold at MUNDUSvini in Germany while the Chenin Blanc received a similar distinction in the annual Michelangelo competition held locally.
He said, “As far as we could ascertain, these are the only gold-medal winners available in bag-in-box locally. This preference for the box in my view also reflects the change in consumer attitudes to value. We are finding more and more consumers trust our brand and accept our word when we say the wine that goes into the box is the same that goes into the bottle.”
