I do believe that most people regard the Helderberg as one of the golden areas for producing fine red wines.
Rudi de Wet, the Bilton Wines winemaker, is producing a really delicious range of wines, both red and white.
The Sir Percy 2005 is a multi layered wine of great complexity and is made up of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon and more or less equal parts of Merlot and Petit Verdot.
Rudi has produced a classic here. It has all the power and grunt of a really fine Cape Bordeaux blend. Full on the nose with crushed tomato leaf, an earthiness which I find totally enchanting, and rich red berries and black fruit like ripe prune plums on the palate. This is no retiring little wall flower from the banks of the Gironde, it’s big and balanced with chunky tannins which are so silky they could be pulled through a wedding ring.
Lovely long and lingering aftertaste making it a superb food wine.
Will sell for about R155 a pop in your local bottle store. Go get!
