Some of us have been lucky enough to get our knees under a table where the food presented on it is cooked by Marlene van der Westhuizen either out in the winelands where she will match to perfection a wine being launched with her food magic or in her FoodStudio in Green Point where she does pretty much the same wonderful thing.
Her first book Delectable spilt some of the beans, if you’ll forgive the awful pun. But she had more to tell. Of her home and food studio in Green Point, her holiday house at L’Agulhas and her kitchen and its food in Charroux, France.
There is a saying which goes “good things come in small parcels.” Marlene is a bag of dynamite. Petite, attractive, she comes across as the real South African she is, and she is brushed with her experiences In France.
Her food is simple real good stuff, redolent of the town square farmer’s markets she visits, the local butcher, baker and artisanal cheesemaker. Her food is generous in eye appeal, in flavour and with the spirit with which it is cooked.
Sumptuous explores places Delectable did not quite get to.
And we are the better off for it.
