My dear friend Jos Baker, whom I once crowned a National Living Treasure for the work she has done for wine and food, was given a life time achievement award by Eat Out some 2 years ago. She deserved it and I proved that I was right! Often at food and wine functions, you’ll see the ginger curly tops long before you realise its Jos. One of the editors of the famous Platter’s South African Wines guide, Jos has now produced a beautiful little book about her house, Klein Zoar in which Wolraad Woltemade was reputed to have lived, one of the Cape’s most historic cottages.
Beautifully designed by Petal Design and containing many photos by her late husband, well known Cape Town photographer David Baker, this is a “must have” for your coffee table or bedside table book in your guest room.
Jos is well versed in journalism, having first edited a fashion magazine and then changing mid-career to wine and food, so you’ll have a good read. She was the author of a well-known [now defunct] dining guide: there were pictures of her in many a kitchen to warn the staff what she looked like – one even had Beware written across it!
Preserving a House by Jos Baker should be available in your local bookshop, but if it isn’t demand they get a copy for you.
Proceeds are going to the upkeep of Kleine Zoar which Jos has bequeathed to the National Sea Rescue Institute.
