Thomas’s Sinnful Emporium

When you are anywhere near a stove attended by Thomas Sinn you are guaranteed a great meal.

Thomas’s restaurant is in the city bowl of Cape Town in a modern building known as Wembley Square. Here too you will find the fabulous Knead where Evan Faull weaves his magic in a baker’s oven. Delicious breads and pastries. Vida e Caffé if you want a quick coffee or if Ice Cream is your thing Thomas’s wife Britta makes Sinnful stuff and you can buy it by the conefull.

Thomas’s food not only looks brilliant, the tastes are deep, wide and authentic. His Cape Bouillabaisse is ‘well worth the detour’. A stunning seafood mélange of prawns, mussels, line fish and calamari in a spicy saffron broth that will transport you to the harbourside in Marseilles.

You’ll even find Ostrich Bobotie lurking amongst the starters.

He is a master at performing miracles with duck – so if there is anything on the menu saying duck – order it! The Duck Liver Parfait is a great way to start a meal – smooth, gentle liver cream served with green fig preserve. The yummy main course duck is served on caramelised cabbage with a honey jus.

Come dessert time you are offered a trio of Britta’s Sinnful Ice Creams served with a fruit filled tuille basket and berry coulis. The day I lunched there, we were served the most zingy lemon meringue pie. But for the ultimate, go for the Decadent Dessert medley and you will have an embarrassment of riches to taste from on one plate.

The Winelist is an object of desire – won Diners Club Wine List Awards and do ask for their wines by the glass, there’s always an interesting selection.

The service is great, not intrusive and yet anticipatory.

The S Bar is a sociable place to meet before dinner to down a couple of their well known and perhaps less well known cocktails and the delis is available for Thomas take-aways and the wines from the Restaurant list are available there too.

Nice place, nice people, nice food.

Thank you Thomas!
